Mlb.Planet DDS services and costs

  • Digital Data Service (Telecom) connections to Mlb.Planet

Mlb.Planet can provide internet connection using Telecom DDS.
This type of connection is a full time service and Telecom supply a permanent circuit from the user site to Mlb.Planet. Each end of this circuit is terminated with an NTU (Network Termination Unit). This NTU can have either an asynchronous or synchronous serial connection, async is only available on slow DDS, ie below 19K2, all other speeds use a sync serial interface. This can either be an X21 or V35 standard interface.

DDS services are available in speeds from 2K4 to 128K. For internet connections the kost practical sppeds are from 48Kbits/second up to 128Kbits/ second. Above 128K are wideband DDS services which go up to 2Mbits/second.

To connect a DDS link to the internet, routers are required at each end of the link. Mlb.Planet uses Cisco routing equipment to interface to X21 ports on DDS circuits. At the customer end a router will be required that can interface to either X21 or V35 sync serial (whichever is provided on the NTU).

The basic cost of a DDS connection to Mlb.Planet is $400 per month. This is made up a $150/month X21 port rental at Mlb.Planet and a $250 internet connection charge.
This DDS connection charges will include all additional services including email, usenet newsfeed, domain name services, internet routing and allocation of a subnet of IP numbers, all NZ internet traffic and up to 200megs of international traffic.
After this 200megs then international traffic costs $400 per gigabyte.
