Leased lines
A leased line internet connection is a service based on an analogue connection.
It has the advantage of being a permanent (or semi-permanent) connection
and not as costly as a Digital Data Service or an ISDN connection
The main disadvantage of an analogue service is that it is generally not
as reliable as a digital service nor as fast.
Modems are used at each of the circuit, these being supplied by the customer.
Traditionally a leased line connection has referred to a connection based on
the Analogue leased line.
services as provided by Telecom.
However, more recently many ISPs are now providing (semi)permanent
connections using ordinary telephone lines. Most often the customer will
simply pay to have a line installed at the ISP and then dial this line, keep it
open, and effectivly have a full time connection to the Internet.
Mlb.Planet can support both of these types of connection.
Costs
Installations and setup
For both types of leased line connection there is a one-off internet setup
charge of $40.
Telecom analogue leased line connection
The basic cost of an analogue leased line connection into Mlb.Planet is
$75 per month. This includes up to 50megabytes of international traffic
per month. Additional traffic is charged at $400 per gigabyte.
Included in this $75 is all national traffic, routing services, domain name
services (although DOMAINZ manage and bill for domain name registrations),
emal and a usenet news feed (if required).
(Note: the Telecom charges for the leased line are not paid by Mlb.Planet)
Permanent phone line connection
There are two components to this monthly charge.
The first is the $75 per month
internet connection fee with data allowances/costs as for Telecom leased
line connections.
The second is the cost of a business telephone line at
Mlb.Planet. Normally Mlb.Planet will have a telephone line installed for
a permanent phone connection and will then on-charge the telecom monthly
charges to the customer. The present cost for a telephone line is
$67+gst per month. The Telecom installation fee for this phone line will also
be on-charged.
The total cost for such a connection would be $75 + $67 per month plus
any data charges if over 50Megs of international traffic is used in a
month.
Pre-paid international data
If a customer knows they will be using more that 50megs of international
traffic per month and are prepared to pre-pay for this traffic then the
monthly connection fees are:
up to 50megs of international traffic $75 +gst
up to 150megs of international traffic $100 +gst
up to 300megs of international traffic $150 +gst
up to 1 gigabyte of international traffic $420 +gst
Modems
For both real leased lines and telephone connections the maximum speed modem
that can be supported is 33k6 (see note below).
Modems for a leased line connection should be provided by the customer.
Mlb.Planet does not provide a modem at the Planet end of the leased line,
although our preference is to use a CTL rack mounting modem.
These can work in leased line mode or as ordinary dial up modems.
and are our preferred modem as they are proven and reliable in both
applications and require almost zero maintenance or servicing.
Mlb.Planet can supply a CTL rack modem, for a monthly rental of $15.
Note: The maximum speed modem that can be supported on a leased
line or permanent telephone line connection is 33k6. The newer 56K modem
technology requires that only one end of the circuit has a short
analogue connection (ie the link from the exchange via a telephone line
to a modem)
Although Mlb.Planet can support K56flex modem dial in connections these are
only available when dialling into Mlb.Planet's Cisco digital modem server
which is using a Primary Rate ISDN.
Channels in this PRI are not available to be used for permanent dial up
connections as this server does not support static IP number or subnets
allocated to individual customers.
Access and Customer equipment
Access to customer equipment (eg modems) is by prior arrangement.
For security
reasons keys and access codes are not issued to owners of telehoused servers.
In an emergency access can be arranged but for normal system maintenance
where a technician needs to get physical access to a modem then this has to
be pre-arranged. Normally two days notice of access requirements are
needed.
Mlb.Planet will not be responsible for the breakdown or loss if customer
owned equipment on the Mlb.Planet network. Losses incurred due to faults
or inaccessibilty are also not accepted.
Customer equipment must be insured against loss by the owners of the
equipment. Evidence of suitable insurance arrangements will be required before
a such equipment (ie modem) can be installed on the Mlb.Planet local area
network.
