Internet Link upgrade

The link upgrade to 128k _almost_ made it in time for the Easter break. After extracting a definite promise from our Telecom account manager that the upgrade would be done last week the actual work was all completed last Thursday. A new NTU (network terminator unit) was installed by the Telecom contractor, and wired up to the Blenheim exchange. The other end of this link, in Auckland, was connected into one of KCCS's stacked wideband DDS and tested. Everything looked good until the new link was connected on Thursday afternoon, all the correct lights on the NTU but no data moving.
After many phone calls it seems that the installation person did indeed correctly install the new NTU, however it had been left in loopback mode for testing and being the last day of work before Easter he was in a rush to get away.
And getaway he did, leaving us without the promised new DDS circuit..
No doubt after the holiday someone will realise the situation and quietly remove the loopback.
Not before I have a real groan at our account manager.

Modem firware and DSP software upgrade

Today all of the 24 Micrcom modems in the Cisco modem server were upgraded to the latest firmware release and the latest DSP softwrae revision.
This upgrade is the first step in bringing the modems up to the new V90 standard for 56K modems. Cisco will be releasing the full upgrade package in the next month or so and all of the mlb.planet modems will be upgraded when the software is available in NZ.
