Dial up accounts

  • PPP accounts.

    The normal type of dial up account to Mlb.Planet uses PPP (Point to Point Protocol).
    PPP is supported by almost every software package designed to work with the internet as well as by most operating systems.
    Several different PPP accounts are available to suit the varying connection time and data volume downloading requirements of users.

  • UUCP accounts.

    A UUCP dialup is a special account where only email and usenet news are required. It is an 'offline' account where email and news are downloaded to the user's own computer.
    A newsreader and local email software are then used to read news and email after disconnecting from the mlb.planet server.
    At the start of each UUCP connection outgoing news and email are uploaded to mlb.planet where it is then forwarded on the Internet.

    UUCP software will be needed at the user's computer, this software is normally included with all Unix operating systems. For DOS and Windows commercial packages such as CONNECT2 are available.

    A UUCP account on Mlb.Planet costs $25 per month where the UUCP polling is no more than once per two hours to the mlb.planet server.
    If more regular polling is needed then the costs can be negotiated. Contact Alan Marston to discuss requirements.

  • Unix Shell accounts.

    Normally Unix shell logins are not made available to dial-in customers of Mlb.Planet. However, in circumstances where such a login is needed it can be made available, although, because of the open access this allows to the main Mlb.Planet host system, such logins are severly restricted (and expensive!).

    A shell login to Mlb.Planet will cost $70 per month. This will include a PPP login and a uucp login, if required. There are no restrictons on connection time and download volumes, except for international traffic where a maximum of 50megabytes is allowed per month. After this international data will be charged at $1 per megabyte.
